Translating as “chestnuts”, Castañas is a practical sculpture made of a series of cups. Originating from Mexico, the terracotta or black natural clay cups can be arranged to create different shapes, or used individually as cups for coffee or mezcal. Made from Oaxacan clay, the pale terracotta is oxidised during firing, leaving the pieces along the spectrum of beige to peach. The black clay cups are made using a traditional artisanal technique local to Oaxaca, Mexico, called barro negro. After soaking the local clay to remove impurities, the clay is moulded and polished using a quartz stone to give it is smooth shine. It is then fired in a wood oven, where it receives its colour. The pottery emerges with a distinctive black colour and metallic like sheen.

Every pair of cups includes 1 individual cup to use as a lid on the top. A wonderful gift for any tequila lovers in your life.

This set is from the designer’s The Oaxacan Loving Collection where the same natural material (a clay local to Oaxaca) yet finished in two different ways to create contrasting colours – one black and the other pale terracotta. Two styles as different as night from day.

Material: Natural clay local to Oaxaca.
Size: 9cm (diameter) x 11cm (height) each
Care instructions: This is a natural clay, which is a very good thermal insulator. It does not get hot with boiling water, so it will protect your fingers. Even though our pieces can resist high temperatures we recommend not to put them in direct contact with fire or for long time in the oven. The special finish with beeswax is resistant enough for food but you should avoid to use aggressive soaps or dishwasher. A soft and natural soap and a sponge is enough to clean them and preserve the beautiful shine for a very long time. You can be confident in the using forks, spoons and table knives with these products. Be careful with sharp knives as these can scratch the piece.

ABOUT THE BRAND

La muerte tiene permiso*

Founded by architect and designer Omar Ortiz Franco, La muerte tiene permiso* arose from a desire to share a contemporary Mexican design aesthetic in a European context. The brand partners with generations-old workshops around Mexico to create objects informed in part by the crafts, histories and folk stories of Mexico, and also by Omar’s architectural design aesthetic. The collections combine the unique materials and historic traditions of his country with a contemporary finish that focuses on clean lines and attention to materials. The * at the end of the brand’s name symbolises that every object has its own story waiting to be researched.
