The vibrant East African print used to craft this handmade bohemian chic dress is a symbol of the colours and natural beauty of the land in East Africa. The loose shaped fit dresses are stitched with small darts around the waist, before flaring out to the hem. Style it with a coordinating clutch and sandals for a mid-week lunch date or heals for a more bold chic style.

The Swahili message at the base of the dress reads ‘Kwa Hili Anayeweza Ni Mungu’ meaning ‘Only God Can Do This’. Kanga (cotton) is a light weight East African cloth printed with bold designs. The material is printed with a message – usually proverbs, slogans, and aphorisms – in Swahili. The message is an important part of the history of the fabric, worn by women to deliver a certain message in East Africa.

ABOUT THE BRAND

Tandi Fashion

Tandi Fashion create clothing inspired and crafted from East African fabric called ‘kanga’. Kanga is a cotton cloth that has Swahili proverbs printed at the base. In East Africa, women wear kangas to express a specific message or feeling on that day through the fabric. Using Kanga fabric, Tandi keeps the Swahili messages within the fabrics allowing one to ‘wear’ their emotions, and keep that little piece of history. The brand never follows fast fashion seasons. When a certain print sells out, it is gone and the brand introduces a new print, reducing waste and making each pattern unique and limited edition. Handmade in London, Tandi fashion employ underprivileged women and a portion of proceeds goes towards programs fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa supporting HIV positive women.
