UNDP X Akojo Market | Empowering Indigenous Women in Mexico Through Craft

We’re thrilled to announce our collaboration with UNDP Mexico on a project to empower indigenous women artisans and preserve, embrace and elevate the handicrafts of the Chiapas state.

This comes as a result of a grant through the UNDP Digital X Solution Programme (formed to connect proven, digital solutions with UNDP Country Offices) of which Akojo Market was selected in 2022, giving us the opportunity to connect with the incredible team in Mexico.

We’re also delighted to bring Angharad Allsop from Routes Interiors onboard to lead product development to create the collection and share her expertise on working with artisans in the local area and ensuring ethical trade.

PROJECT LOWDOWN:

84.3% of rural indigenous women live in poverty in Mexico, with gender-based violence, a lack of basic social services and high levels of unemployment just a few of the challenges facing them. All exacerbated by the impacts of COVID-19 which has led to a drastic decrease in families’ revenues.

Our programme seeks to advance the economic independence and livelihood of indigenous women in Chiapas and assemble a capacity building programme that will provide guidance on sustainable production, logistics and selling to international markets, so that they can continue to operate independently following project completion.

We look forward to sharing our progress, and, ultimately, some beautiful, authentic homeware interwoven with stories of Mexican’s colourful craft traditions and women empowerment. Updates to follow!
