Collection: Mmaa Social
Location of artisan makers: Ghana & Burkina Faso
Mmaa Social work with a collective of just over 200 women on the border of Ghana and Burkina Faso. Their baskets not only reflect generations of traditional handicraft, they also provide income and financial independence for rural women in a context where employment is scarce or underpaid. The collective provides a supportive network, giving members access to financial literacy training, sexual and reproductive health education and business support programs. In addition, the brand seeks to support and end the silence around period poverty by gifting a reusable sanitary kit to a girl or young woman for every basket sold. Woven by hand, each basket takes two to three days to produce and is made using locally procured straw and vegetable based dyes.
