A small hand-embroidered turtle sewn on to 100% black linen fabric. A traditional piece of art to be framed and displayed on furniture, or hung on the wall.
A milaya is an ornately embroidered sheet decorated with swirls of flowers, trees and animals, traditionally used for dowries and celebrations. The civil war in South Sudan has displaced more than two million people. Today, in Bidibidi, the second largest refugee camp in the world, women continue to sew milaya.
The Milaya Project is a non-profit working with female artists living in Bidibidi settlement in Uganda connecting refugee artists with international customers who want to support this traditional art form. Each piece is made by a different milaya artist and is unique. All profits return to the artisans.

ABOUT THE BRAND
The Milaya Project
The Milaya Project is a non-profit working with female artists living in Bidibidi settlement in Uganda, the 2nd largest refugee camp in the world. In 2016, as a peace deal in South Sudan crumbled, hundreds of thousands of people fled into Uganda. National Geographic photographer Nora Lorek asked residents what they’d brought from home. “Nothing,” one woman replied, “except for some clothes wrapped in my bedsheet.” These milayas, once used for celebrations now held the refugees’ last possessions. Lorek & writer Nina Strochlic published a story about the tradition & received interest from readers hoping to purchase them. In 2019, they launched the Milaya Project to connect refugee artists with international customers.
