Tzinacan Footed Black Ceramic Bowl

Tzinacan Footed Black Ceramic Bowl

Tzinacan means bat in Nahuatl, an indigenous Mexican language. Bats were of great importance in pre-hispanic Mexico mythology, symbolising different aspects in each culture, from darkness and earth to corn and fertility. Handmade in Oaxaca, this unique black footed bowl is made using a local traditional artisanal technique called barro negro. First the clay is soaked for 20 days to purify. Once shaped, it is smoked to achieve its black colour and burnished, rather than glazed, by polishing the surface with a quartz crystal. To finish, the small footed bowls are wood-fired in underground pits or kilns, emerging with their signature dark colour and warm glossy glow. Use to keep keys and trinkets, or as a thoughtful gift to a friend.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Natural clay local to Oaxaca.
13cm (diameter) x 7cm (height)
This is a natural clay, which is a very good thermal insulator. It does not get hot with boiling water, so it will protect your fingers. Even though our pieces can resist high temperatures we recommend not to put them in direct contact with fire or for long time in the oven. The special finish with beeswax is resistant enough for food but you should avoid to use aggressive soaps or dishwasher. A soft and natural soap and a sponge is enough to clean them and preserve the beautiful shine for a very long time. You can be confident in the using forks, spoons and table knives with these products. Be careful with sharp knives as these can scratch the piece.
